At age twelve, Matt is left alone by his family in the Maine wilderness to survive and become independent. While his father
journeys to Quincy to gather and return with his family Matt is left to learn the secrets of the forest. Although Matt is alone he
befriends a local Indian, Attean, and his family. Matt and Attean become good friends learning about each other and from one
another. Months pass and eventually Matt’s family returns to Maine where Matt is no longer a boy, but has become a man.
Matt is a young boy living alone in the wilderness of Maine when he must overcome a variety of challenges in order to survive.
Alone and afraid Matt fears surviving in the forest after his gun is stolen by a stranger. When Ben comes “tramping out from the
trees” (pg. 11) Matt feels a “curl of alarm against his backbone” (pg. 11). Matt fears the worst in Ben questioning where he came from,
what he wants and what he will do to Matt. However, Matt is pleasant to Ben, takes him in for the night and cooks him dinner. Matt
has a sleepless night though wondering “How long was Ben going to stay?” (pg. 17) fearing Ben would eat all of his rations, possibly
hurt him or steal his father’s rifle. When Matt awakens in the morning Ben is gone and “his father’s rifle was not hanging over the
door” (pg. 18). Ben had stolen it and Matt no longer had any protection. He had no way to hunt for meat and was disappointed in
himself and knew his father would be disappointed as well.
